![]() It's a celebration of the power of words and storytelling, and of those who love them, and its hints of hope shine through what could otherwise be a depressing tale. ![]() The novel kicks into gear again in what is essentially its third act, which sees Bird reunited with his friend Sadie, a foster child who has run away, and also sees Margaret's life work culminate in a surprising work of political art.Īlhough the world Ng portrays is not wholly credible, the novel succeeds as parable, with its echoes of myriad folk tales glimmering through the gray days of ordinary life under this restrictive regime. ![]() Its a story about the power-and limitations-of art to create change, the lessons and legacies we pass on to our children, and how any of us can survive a broken world with our hearts intact. Without the fairy-tale trappings, Margaret comes across as perhaps too good to be true, a brave and self-sacrificing artist whose inner life remains annoying opaque. Our Missing Hearts is an old story made new, of the ways supposedly civilized communities can ignore the most searing injustice. The novel then broadens out - or, less charitably, becomes diffused - as it documents the life of Margaret, past and present.
