![]() ![]() ![]() Nine years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Karl Marx, with a fuzzy beard like pop-doctor Andrew Weill, has become a cuddly, kitschy, innocuous object of fun, nostalgia and irony. It's cloth-bound, with luxuriously heavy pages, a red ribbon for marking pages, a cover painting, in socialist-realism style, by the trendy New York artists Vitaly Komar and Alex Melamid, and an exhortation on the back: "Workers of the world, unite!" Barnes & Noble, reports Publisher's Weekly, will promote it heavily at the cash register: communism as an impulse purchase. ![]() Has it come to this? In celebration of the 150th anniversary of "The Communist Manifesto," Verso Press has announced publication - on May Day, naturally - of what it calls an "upscale, sybarite's edition" of the famous revolutionary tract by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. ![]()

Kristy Gordon’s work is a frank and intimate reflection of her curiosity about other people, transformations and self-discovery. ![]() An abstract beam of light at the left, and a triangle seemingly floating in the center, add to the uncanny nature of this small masterwork. The eeriness of the painting lyes in the dichotomy between the left and right side of the composition. The right third of the painting is 'picture perfect:' a cherry blossom in full bloom and pink hazy landscape in the background. Wolves lope through the composition as birds fly the opposite direction, away from the smoke and flames. A surrealist oil painting by a classically trained painter. ![]() ![]() ![]() The new movie comes from Dev Patel, who writes, directs, and stars. Savannah, it turns out, is catatonic, and before the suicide attempt had completely assumed the identity of a dead friend-the implication being that she couldn't stand being a Wingo anymore. ![]() ![]() When he hears that his fierce, beautiful twin sister Savannah, a well-known New York poet, has once again attempted suicide, he escapes his present emasculation by flying north to meet Savannah's comely psychiatrist, Susan Lowenstein. Tom Wingo is an unemployed South Carolinian football coach whose internist wife is having an affair with a pompous cardiac man. A flabby, fervid melodrama of a high-strung Southern family from Conroy ( The Great Santini, The Lords of Discipline), whose penchant for overwriting once again obscures a genuine talent. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Long before Virgil's time, Romans liked to believe that among their ancestors were the legendary Trojans, who, under Aeneas's leadership, sailed from Troy, in Asia Minor (present-day Turkey), westward across the Mediterranean Sea to Italy and settled in Latium, site of the future Rome. Because the events that take place in the poem were recounted from generation to generation, they eventually took on the appearance of unquestionable truth. We must bear in mind, however, that the epic was seen in an entirely different light by Virgil's contemporaries. It is primarily a fiction whose narrative fabric, woven from myth and legend, traces a pattern that appears in the most profound myths that concern the human spirit's eternal quest for self-perpetuation. The Aeneid, the story of a band of survivors who leave their destroyed city to seek another home in a faraway country, is about rebirth, about life springing forth from ruin and death. ![]() ![]() ![]() “Byrne is a force in the genre.”- RT Book Reviews But can she trust a man who’s been branded a rebel, a thief, and a killer?
